Historic Homes

Join us for a leisurely stroll along the timeworn streets of Charleston's Historic District. As you explore the architecture and flora South of Broad Street, our expert guides will highlight the most colorful stories of the Charlestonians who have lived in these majestic southern homes. Our first call will be on the docents of The Charleston Museum's Heyward-Washington House (c.1770). This Colonial brick mansion originally belonged to Thomas Heyward - a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Among the Heyward-Washington House's notable features are an authentic 18th century kitchen replete with cook ware and utensils from the period, as well as a remarkable English Charleston Garden.

Boon Hall Plantation

Boone Hall is one of America's oldest working plantations. We have been continuously growing and producing crops for over 320 years. Once known for cotton and pecans, we are still actively producing peaches, strawberries, tomatoes, and pumpkins, as well as many other fruits and vegetables for our visitors to enjoy. Our U-Pick fields are open in season, and we are looking forward to the Grand Opening of the Boone Hall Farm's Market in summer 2003.

Drayton Hall

Welcome to Drayton Hall, a National Trust historic site in Charleston, South Carolina. Completed in 1742, the historic plantation house stands majestically on a 630-acre site and is one of the finest examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture in America. Through seven generations of Drayton family ownership, the plantation house has remained in nearly original condition and offers an opportunity to experience history, to imagine the people-white and black-who lived and worked in a far different time.

Drayton Hall is the oldest preserved plantation house in America that is open to the public.

Middleton Place

Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark and a carefully preserved 18th-century plantation that has survived revolution, Civil War, and earthquake. It was the home of four important generations of Middletons, beginning with Henry Middleton, President of the First Continental Congress; Arthur, a signer of the Declaration of Independence; Henry, Governor of South Carolina and an American Minister to Russia; and Williams, a signer of the Ordinance of Secession.

Edmonston-Alston House

The stately Edmondston-Alston House was built in 1825 on Charleston's High Battery and is one of the city's most splendid dwellings. A witness to many dramatic events in Charleston's history, the Edmondston-Alston House is a classic example of the city's changing and sophisticated taste in architecture and decorative arts.

Bocci's Italian Restaurant

If I were going to create an Italian restaurant, I'd design it with several small dining rooms, each slightly different from the other but all with cool terra cotta tile floors. Then I'd cover the walls with stucco and adorn them with lifelike murals. I'd use dark wood furniture appropriate to the theme and I'd use skylights to make sure the overall feeling was light and airy. Bocci's - a great Italian restaurant in historic downtown Charleston.
